To Dye For: Coloration Options in FFXIV

Making Use of Dye in FFXIV

NPC and Crafted Coloration

In our earlier guide, Color Your World, we provide the basic information on unlocking the dye ability.  This guide is going to focus on the range and source of dye availability.  Depending on the color, these come from either an NPC in Ul’Dah, or from player merchants via the market boards.

Dye can be NPC purchased from the NPC, Nanabe.  He can be found in the southernmost market ward in Ul’Dah and she lists as an “Independent Merchant.”  The following inexpensive options are available from this merchant, each available for 40 gil.

  • Gloom Purple
  • Bark Brown
  • Opo-opo Brown
  • Orchard Brown
  • Mole Brown
  • Ice Blue
  • Sky Blue
  • Ceruleum Blue
  • Rose Pink
  • Blood Red

Additionally, the same NPC has a listing of more expensive selection.  This list of dye runs for 216 gil each and includes the following color options.

Another range of dye is available from crafters.  These will generally be found on the market boards.  Their prices will vary and you will typically buy them in stacks.  These will not be inexpensive, creating dye requires two crystals (the type varies by crafter) and a pigment.  Each of these are level 30 harvests.  All crafter can make dye and they all make the same list.  At level 30, crafters can make the following dye.

Player Created Dye (level 30)

  • Dalamund Red
  • Wine Red
  • Royal Blue
  • Abyssal Blue
  • Honey Yellow
  • Hunter Green
  • Sahagin Blue (a green tint)
  • Pumpkin Orange

There’s a ‘Soot’ crafted dye too, I think.

I’d love to see some sort of preview option for dyes. The same shade of dye seems to color different items differently, and the colors don’t always match what you expect from the name.

For example, I got a very distinct pumpkin color using the blood red dye on a sallet, while the same dye made the rest of my armor a nifty shade of red.
